Avril Cole is a corporate and projects Partner based in Dubai from where she advises international and GCC-based clients.
For the past fifteen years, Avril has built a strong reputation as a trusted advisor to corporates on complex, high-value transactions in the natural resources and infrastructure sectors. She has guided many businesses with respect to their outbound investments into businesses in emerging and frontier markets, particularly in Africa.
She has significant experience with mergers and acquisitions transactions, divestitures (asset and corporate), due diligence matters, joint ventures, partnerships and strategic alliances.
Avril also provides legal and strategic advice to sponsors and developers of natural resource and power sector projects. In this regard, she has advised clients acquiring natural resources projects, including participating in the negotiation of complex mine development and concession agreements and fiscal incentive arrangements.
She has also advised developers on the negotiation of power purchase and energy purchase agreements with emerging market governments, particularly in Africa.
From time to time, Avril has acted for governments on developing extractive industry legislative frameworks and the drafting of related legislation.
Avril regularly speaks at conferences and has made presentations to clients and industry groups all over the world on various legislative developments affecting the mining and energy sectors. She has written numerous articles and is frequently quoted in the press on issues relating to the mining and energy industries in Africa.
Avril served on the board of directors of the Canada-Africa Chamber of Business between 2011 and 2018 and was board chair between 2015 and 2018. She also served as a non-executive director of TSX-V listed Golden Valley Mines between 2015 and 2017.

Avril was recognised by Lexpert as a leading Canadian Mining and Energy Lawyer in 2018 and has been named one of the “Most Influential People of African Descent” in MIPAD’s 2017 “Global Top 100 Under 40” listing.
Avril was called to the bar in the Province of Ontario, Canada in 2006 and practiced law in Canada until 2019. She is a member of the Ontario bar. She was was called to the New York State Bar in 2004. Prior to joining Keystone Law Middle East in 2021, she worked at the following firms:
